Tbf, I’ve never once said knapsack. It’s a backpack, or a tote, or a drawstring bag.
I agree on knapsack. I have never used the term. It’s a backpack or a bookbag or a dufflebag.
I mean, knapsack is a real word, but it’s a little old fashioned & to me describes a specific *kind* of bag: a small squarish canvas or leather bag that opens from a flap at the top of the bag & may be a backpack or may only have a single strap. Like this:
I also might expect the word “knapsack” to be used to describe the bundle at the end of a hobo stick/bindle:
It definitely doesn’t mean the same thing as backpack, though!
