This is how the Archive Team is going to save Tumblr (and you can help us)
There is a website in trouble like Tumblr
We have hundreds of warriors machines, which run a special operating system made for archiving the web.
There is a tracker which is a central ToDo list worked on by each warrior. The warriors keep the files for archiving only for a moment before they hand them to the staging servers.
The staging server collect and process the data into huge .warc files which are accepted by archive.org
archive.org process and indexed our .warc files and makes them available in the wayback machine. It takes care of the long term hosting. Each TB stored costs somewhere between 1500$ and 2000$ in the long run.
Our minimum how much we will save is above 60 TBs. An estimate of the total size of the NSFW part of tumblr alone is 10-20 times that. Even when we will archive only a fraction it is going to be expensive. When you donate to archive.org today. Your donation will be matched.
AO3 has reached 25,000 fandoms! To celebrate, we’ve put together info about fandom tags and how all tags work: https://goo.gl/W4wPxH
Hey folks who use AO3 – please read and reblog widely. In addition to the celebration of our 25,000th canonical fandom, this post contains some great tips for making our tagging system work for you.
As a Support Staffer and Tag Wrangler for AO3, I beg you:
Among the tips:
Separate your / and & ships / is for romantic and/or sexual
relationships. & is for platonic relationships only – ones that are
neither sexual nor romantic. (Pre- and Post-Relationship are still /.)
& was created for those Gen fans who don’t want anything
non-platonic in the ships they’re searching for. You can help both Gen
fans and shippers by carefully choosing the tag that matches your work!
Look, I know you’re writing a slow burn where the friendship aspect of the relationship is important. I applaud that; I love it in my romantic pairings. But it’s a /, not a &. Please save & for those of us who want to find the three truly and purely gen fics for a popular romantic ship.
Folks, I LOVE AO3, please read and share!
As someone relatively new to using AO3, I did not really realise this. *goes back to check tags* THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS.
TAG WRANGLING: For Pairings
/ is for romantic or sexual relationships
& is for platonic, non-romantic, non-sexual relationships
If you tag something as “x/y platonic” I will find you and I will chew up every pair of shoes you possess.
Haha yeah no kidding right? Life has been busy and I’ve had other projects and commitments overshadowing things, and honestly I just needed a break from stuff in general, but trust me you all are my forever everything Paul Gross peeps. ❤
It’s true! And not just in Egypt, it’s recorded as a standard burglar technique in 12th century Persia. So much so that catching a fellow in the middle of the night carrying a crowbar and a drill wouldn’t necessarily prove anything, but if he also had a live tortoise with him, well it could only be a professional burglar.
“The tortoise is employed thus. The burglar has with him a
flint-stone and a candle about as big as a little finger. He lights the
candle and sticks it on the tortoise’s back. The tortoise is then
introduced through the breach into the house, and it crawls slowly
around, thereby illuminating the house and its contents.”
Throwback to the time my poor German teacher had to explain the concept of formal and informal pronouns to a class full of Australians and everyone was scandalised and loudly complained “why can’t I treat everyone the same?” “I don’t want to be a Sie!” “but being friendly is respectful!” “wouldn’t using ‘du’ just show I like them?” until one guy conceded “I suppose maybe I’d use Sie with someone like the prime minister, if he weren’t such a cunt” and my teacher ended up with her head in her hands saying “you are all banned from using du until I can trust you”
God help Japanese teachers in Australia.
if this isnt an accurate representation of australia idk what is
Australia’s reverse-formality respect culture is fascinating. We don’t even really think about it until we try to communicate or learn about another culture and the rules that are pretty standard for most of the world just feel so wrong. I went to America this one time and I kept automatically thinking that strangers using ‘sir’ and ‘ma’am’ were sassing me.
Australians could not be trusted with a language with ingrained tiers of formal address. The most formal forms would immediately become synonyms for ‘go fuck yourself’ and if you weren’t using the most informal version possible within three sentences of meeting someone they’d take it to mean you hated them.
100% true.
the difference between “‘scuse me” and “excuse me” is a fistfight
