While the dS virtual bar is getting on its DW feet, can anyone help me out with some fics, please? The Rec Center tinyletter is looking for fics that have winter themes and not many fandoms are more appropriately-supplied with wintry fics than ours. I can think of the plots of a few, but I don’t remember the titles.
BTW, if you don’t already subscribe, The Rec Center is a great multi-fandom newsletter–I definitely recommend it! And if you do subscribe (and submitted something), let me know you already suggested a title so we don’t repeat.
If various companies think that pulling their content from Netflix so they can host their own streaming service will make them sign up to theirs then they are wrong. It will just make me pirate their content again.
The whole point of paying for a streaming was getting all the stuff you like on one place. If I have to pay for multiple streaming services I might as well buy cable.
It’s like they don’t realize that I only stopped stealing as a courtesy to the creators. Make it remotely inconvenient and I’ll go right back to piracy
So I got Teh Boy to read Song of the Lioness (which he loved, except for the bits with Liam) and I was trying to find the constellation bit in LR and..
HOW ON EARTH DID I MISS FOR SO LONG that Thayet builds her school with Myles, Eleni, GARY, and GEORGE. Why would you have George in your school? What does he know about formalized education? How did Gary get involved?! He is canonically running himself ragged; was he just THAT BIG A NERD?! Like, Duke G seems way more likely to have been involved, unless he had already declared himself officially done with his time serving the youth and WHAT WOULD THIS SCHOOL EVEN BE LIKE how is this the school board Thayet what have you gotten yourself into?!
I need this fic.
I mean you absolutely need George as he is the only one in that group with any kind of proximity to the population Thayet is trying to create schools for. He’s the one who’s going to be reminding the other nobles of the things they wouldn’t even consider, like making sure all the students have access to school materials even if their families can’t afford it, or ensuring the schedule is flexible enough to allow students to still work so their families don’t lose a provider while they’re in school. George is the one who will be able to talk to the families of potential students in a way that won’t make them feel condescended to or judged for their life circumstances. George brings the authenticity to the project, and the accessibility.
I imagine Gary’s role would be slightly more hands-off, like an administrator type. Like it’s his job to get the political side of things going smoothly, and to talk the schools up to other nobles on the councils and such.
I think both Eleni and Myles would be more the curriculum building and teacher training. Eleni home-schooled George, and Myles is already an official teacher, so that seems well within both of their wheelhouses.
I imagine that as it’s her passion project Thayet would have her hand in all of these aspects.
Oh man, you are totally right about George. Thank you for the perspective shift.
I bet Gary’s role is 75% what you said and 25% trying to cosplay as his dad.
Oh I love that, that’s great. Gary pretends to be snarky, but in reality super admires his dad and just wants to be half as good a mentor as Duke Gareth was. Perfect.
(come to think of it, they both have orange hair and orange eyes………… i feel like this is relevant to when all those posts about cryptid!dex were going around)
this post has elicited some strong reactions so i’m determined to keep it on all your dashes. happy chanukah
So there’s these computer programs called artificial neural networks that are good at imitating things. By seeing examples of what humans did, they can learn to translate languages, predict product sales, and even categorize text and images as innocuous or explicit (it has a lot of trouble with this last task, as it turns out).
One neural network I use, called textgenrnn, tries its best to imitate any kind of text you give it. I’ve given them paint colors, bandnames, and even guinea pig names and in each case their results are somewhat… mixed. (Paint colors called Stanky Bean, Stargoon, and Turdly, for example) The problem is that it doesn’t know what any of these words mean – it’s just picking letter combinations that seem likely to it.
This is what happened when I gave it all the cookies from a list of American recipes. This is what human cookies sound like to a neural network.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go whip up a batch of Fluffin Coffee Drops.
For more cookies, including the neural net’s strange obsession with “balls,” as well as bonus material every time I post, you can sign up here.
if you’re american and coming to australia, I’m gonna go ahead and say that you should be 100 percent way more worried about being king hit by a dude named “dane” in a bintang singlet than any fucking spiders that exist here
what does this say in english
“Good sir, if you are a resident of the United States of America and coming to visit the sunny land of Australia, allow me to inform you that you should be rather more concerned about being sucker punched by a gentleman named ‘Dane’ who is likely to be seen wearing a wifebeater with a beer company logo on it than by any of the dangerous spiders that exist on this lovely continent”.
ok so what does it say in american
“You’re more likely to get sucker punched/cold-cocked by an asshole than you are to be bitten by a spider”.
thank you
Well rattle my spoons, that don’t make a lick of sense. Wot in tarnation does this hootenanny say?
“If ya mosey on by Australia, you best be fixin’ to get to some fisticuffs more’n checkin fer spiders.”
