Hey all! This community isn’t as active as it once was, but I think in light of what’s happening on tumblr we should think about whether we want to try and establish this comm on other social platforms as well. As I see it, we have a few options:

  • We can attempt to revive the lj comm
  • We can create a DW comm
  • We can check out a new/different social platform such as mastodon or pillowfort
  • Some combination of the above
  • No, it isn’t worth it to try and move the whole comm, Mish is probably overreacting

As far as I know, neither @thisisteal nor I have had any posts flagged at this point, & since we’re still the admins that’s promising for nothing happening to this blog. For the meantime I’ve requested assistance with backing up this blog here. But I’d love to hear from all of you about your thoughts & feelings on this!

Fair warning, I’ve had some struggles in the past year & may not be able to facilitate the leap to a different platform.

(I would also encourage all of you to check out/contribute to this google doc about what fandom would like to see out of a potential new platform. The guy who owns Pinboard has suggested that he may be willing to make a new site for fans to move to, and if you’re unfamiliar he has a very good track record with these things. The doc is being compiled for him to see what we would like to see out of such a thing.)

Having gone through at least one big fandom move in the past, I would love it if this comm were at least backed up on Dreamwidth or Pillowfort (or some combination of platforms). I don’t know about the LJ comm for this community specifically, but I know there’s lots of old comms with excellent posts and meta that I and others will post in just to keep them from being lost due to inactivity.

Honestly, whether or not it would be worth it to move/back up the comm will likely depend on where a lot of the current fandom decides to go, if they decide to go (and given tumblr’s lazy and ridiculous AI, I’m betting on a lot of people moving house). Just my two cents.

It’s good to hear that at least some folks would like to see the comm backed up! Does anyone have any platform preferences? DW seems like an obvious choice but it might be worth it to look into also making the leap to PF or another platform.

Honestly, one of the things I’m most concerned about is losing the posts of old members of this community who are no longer on tumblr (such as pintpotjudas and catladyinwaiting) whose posts are currently only preserved through reblogs, so if I start working on any kind of preservation that’ll probably be my first priority.

If we do end up making the leap to another platform, I’d love if 1-2 people could volunteer to help Teal & I mod/admin.

Since I refused to sign LJ’s TOS back when, I’d like to see things at least archived on DW. I volunteer to help if I can–with the understanding that I’m not a programmer and pretty terrible in general at tech stuff.

honestly the actual work of “helping people figure out the new platform” and “greeting new community members” and so on is really what would be the most difficult for me. I’d enthusiastically welcome help with the actual archiving, obviously, but if you were willing to lend a hand with the work of setting up a new comm/modding it that would be amazing!

It sounds like those of us participating in this discussion right now are leaning heavily toward DW for this? If I don’t hear from anyone otherwise by, say, 8pm US Mountain Time (1am GMT) I’ll move forward with creating a DW comm, if that sounds good to everyone?

Fandom platform of the future – specs and features

So I made a tweet about how Maciej Ceglowski (aka Pinboard guy) should consult with fandom on how to build a new fandom platform inclusive of not just text, but images and multimedia.

And then Maciej DMed me and said if fandom (I realize this does not include all parts of fandom) can get a consensus spec of what this platform should consist of, he’ll see what we can do. I have split the document into requirements and nice to haves. I know I’m not going to get everything, but hopefully this is a good enough start to get the ball rolling.

I kind of laughed like “Haha, what hubris, my tech friends say it’ll take a couple million dollars to create a platform like this, one does not simply walk into Mordor” but then all my tech friends were like, “Uh, hon? It’s Maciej Ceglowski. He either HAS a couple million to spend, or can talk his friends into fronting the money.”

So, uh… go make a wishlist!

@tatterdemalionamberite

Nomination: Tumblr’s set up but with functional black and white lists. X-kits features. AO3s tagging and tag wranglers.

I posted about this yesterday, but this one has more notes and a little bit more info!

every day I think about how hysterical it is that taika waititi really almost had a scene in thor ragnarok where thor reveals he has “LOKI R.I.P.” tattooed on his wrist like thats. literally so funny how did that get past anyone at marvel there is FOOTAGE of them shooting that scene gjkhdfjkghgf

like let’s unpack this behind the scenes photo:

1. that’s taika’s forearm and and he clearly practiced writing tattoo ideas on his own arm, in ballpoint pen, moments before shooting, and “loki 4 eva” was a rejected idea

2. thor’s tattoo is also written in ballpoint pen

3. chris hemsworth has absurdly well-manicured hands. not relevant to this discussion but it’s worth pointing out

If Hulk can smash Thor around and not even break his skin, what I want to know is what kind of freakin needle can actually bust through that godly epidermis and make a lasting impression on it. These are important questions.

serious answer: skurge, also an asgardian, has head tattoos, so ostensibly there’s some kind of godly tattoo parlor out there

fun answer: thor possibly, in canon, also literally wrote this “tattoo” in ballpoint pen and just kept writing over it whenever it faded because he’s not quite sure what a tattoo actually is

hot take:

Gloin is the sexiest dwarf by dwarf standards.

Kili is the sexiest dwarf by elf standards.

Thorin is the sexiest dwarf by human standards

& Bombur is the sexiest dwarf by hobbit standards

#ITS TRUE AND YOU SHOULD SAY IT #(ALSO THORIN AND KILI BEING ‘UGLY’ BY DWARF STANDARDS IS AMUSING CONTENT)

further take: Kili is straight-up ugly by dwarf standards. Thorin is like, the dwarf equivalent of Benedict Cumberbatch. Some dwarves think he’s an absolutely dreamboat, others think he is super weird looking, there’s very little middle ground.

omg now i’m like. what does this make frodo by hobbit standards

by hobbit standards, I’m afraid Frodo is probably. not conventionally attractive at all.

This makes Sam the hot friend of the group, which is so fucking valid

Frodo is the hot one by elf standards.

Merry is the hot one by human standards.

Sam is the hot one by hobbit standards.

Pippin is…definitely a Took.
