There was a big blizzard that blew through most of the southern half of the state last night, and a very nice kid came up to me today at the rest stop and said “Ma’am, I noticed you have a car*, and I wanted to–which way are you going? North or south?”
I was incredibly taken aback and still in more of a “driving listening to the radio” frame of mind than a “talking to real live people” frame of mind, so I somewhat stupidly told him I was going west. (I mean, I was, but I was taking the road we were on north to my turnoff, not taking off to the west immediately through the sagebrush and snowdrifts.)
He explained that he had noticed a lot of cars on the side of the road that had spun out and even one that had flipped (I had also noticed this, but it’s not exactly an uncommon sight after a blizzard and it hadn’t really phased me). I immediately responded “oh, coming up from Rawlins way?” to which he replied no, up from Medicine Bow way, and looked at me expectantly–at which point my embarrassment was complete and I quickly said goodbye and hustled myself back out to my car. You see, the highway we were on is the highway you take if you want to avoid going over Elk Mountain and through Rawlins, but I said Rawlins because I could not for the life of me think of the name of Medicine Bow.
I was so embarrassed about the whole encounter that it did not occur to me until half an hour later that he was concerned for my safety and was probably trying to offer me a ride.
