sometimes I still can’t quite believe that once upon a time I had to explain to the other members of the board of my college’s recently formed umbrella environmentalism group that the outdoors club did actually have quite a bit in common with us.

The next person who tries to correct me when I say “Happy Holidays” is going to be told Happy Hanukkah instead. Very tired of hearing, “No, it’s MERRY CHRISTMAS.” I’m pretty sure Judaism was around a lot longer than your Buckstar’s boycotting butt, Karen.

My boss once shared a great story about that. This happened when he was in a layover in North Carolina back when the “War on Christmas” bullshit was first becoming prominent. He had gone to get a pack of cigarettes, and after he paid for it:

“Merry Christmas.”
“Happy holidays.”
No. I said Merry Christmas.”
“Do you know what Hanukkah is about?”
“No, what?”
“Some people tried to make us worship their ways, so we rose up and killed them. Happy Hanukkah.

I can finally post the full piece I did for @shapeofwaterzine , which I’ve decided to call “The Shape of Old Bay.”

I’m sure Elisa doesn’t miss all that much about being a human, but beneath the waves, surrounded by a bounty of seafood but nothing to season it with, the heart of any true Baltimorean would long for only one thing: Old Bay.

And you know who would absolutely have her back? Zelda, that’s who.

A while ago I was lurking on Twitter and saw some film critics having a conversation about the eye lighting in giallo films (which are basically Italian horror and noir films from the ‘60s and ‘70s). Someone pointed out it was the same weird eye lighting they have in TOS. They speculated that it may have come from American noir but no one seemed to know for sure.

I did some research of my own and found out that:

a) It was probably made popular by the 1931 Dracula

b) It is now commonly known as a “Shatner light”

c) A lot of people also associate it with Morticia Addams

For me the real question is: Why on Earh was TOS using the same lighting techniques as horror and noir films?
